1. Who We Are
HOP Brighton ("HOP", "we", "us") operates a technology platform that connects passengers with licensed Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) drivers across Brighton & Hove and surrounding areas. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data in line with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
2. Data We Collect
- Account details — name, email address, and WhatsApp phone number.
- Booking data — pickup and destination addresses, journey times, fare, and payment method.
- Location data — real-time location during an active booking (for matching, tracking, and safety).
- Payment data — processed securely by our payment provider; we do not store full card numbers.
- Support & communications — messages you send us and records of your enquiries.
3. How We Use Your Data
- To provide and manage your rides, including matching you with a driver and calculating fares.
- To process payments and issue receipts.
- To keep you and drivers safe (live tracking, SOS, incident handling).
- To provide customer support and handle complaints.
- To comply with our legal and licensing obligations.
4. Legal Bases
We rely on: performance of a contract (to provide your ride), legitimate interests (safety, fraud prevention, service improvement), legal obligation (licensing and tax), and consent (where required, e.g. optional marketing).
5. Driver Privacy & Anonymised Contact
We do not share your phone number directly with drivers. Where calls or messages are needed, we use anonymised communication channels so your personal number stays private.
6. Sharing Your Data
We share data only where necessary: with the assigned driver (limited booking details), our payment and messaging providers, and authorities where legally required. We never sell your personal data.
7. Data Retention
We keep booking and account data only as long as necessary for the purposes above and to meet legal and licensing requirements. CCTV and safety records are retained in line with local licensing conditions (typically up to 30 days unless required for an investigation).
8. Your Rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your data, to object to processing, and to data portability. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below. You may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
9. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit and access controls.
10. Contact
For any privacy questions or to exercise your rights, email hello@hopbrighton.co.uk.
